The effects of wind-chill

This weekend in the UK we will experience our first sub zero rides of the winter season, sub zero I hear you say.  Yes that is right when you factor in wind chill we are looking at
0 to -9 degrees Celsius this weekend when riding at 15mph.

As you can see from the chart below even when doing some steady base miles at 15mph with an air temperature of 4 degrees the wind-chill factor on you is in fact -6 degrees! So no surprise we often get so cold when out on the bike. Then take into account that you’re riding into a 10mph headwind and now you’re down to -9 degrees. So always remember to take into account the wind-chill effect when deciding what to wear and hopefully your winter training rides will be a little more comfortable this year.
